De Stijl 1917-1931

De Stijl started in the Netherlands a movement that was inspired from art deco, De Stijl was all about abstract forms, Geometric shapes, use of straight lines, with use of primary colours together with black and white in all negative spaces, Designs and structures all followed the same directions either horizontal or vertical lines , they used geometric spaces to create most forms . De Stijl advocated Form and Function .

De Stijl translated from Dutch to English as 'the style' in my eyes its the simple style, De
Stijl really formed after the world war 1 it brought this want for new life, a spiritual redemption. the artist and designers wanted to create a langue through art they wanted to pass a message of visual utopia freeing the people for the government and the horrors of the war

This image fetchers Piet Mondrian and a few of his own pieces
as we can see everything has straight lines with use of colour in solid perimeters.
each product/structure has a simple and functional form and function, minimal use of decoration.

'The truly modern artist is aware of abstraction in an emotion of beauty'
Quote by Piet Mondrian

This piece is by Gerrit Rietveld, this is the famous Red and Blue Chair
The form of this product is ultra slim and slick the lines are kept simple and purely for its function, the construction of this piece was also left very basic just attaching/laying forms/shapes next to each other to create a sound structure, in this piece we see the artist used the primary colour together with balck while all negative space would be filled with white from the surroundings, during De Stijl's movement the interior walls of houses would have used white to create this industrial feel

This is an album cover for the white stripes we can see that they were inspire, they used the De Stijl Characteristics, by doing this the artist kept there image with creating interest and created depth with the use of these forms.
